Beast of Britain Mountain Bike Expedition 2017

Our aim is to ride as part of an expedition group the best mountain bike trails the UK has to offer.

Is it for me?

You will need to be passionate about mountain biking and be confident on Red runs at trail centres in the UK. You will need to make a commitment to be bike fit before departure and will need to ride a full suspension mountain bike. (There is an option to rent one.) A good book to read prior is Alps Mountain Biking by Steve Mallett.


The total cost of the expedition is £400 to include a training weekend in Wales. The expedition selection fee is not included in the above cost.

What is included in the Price?

Selection and training which will involve riding in trail centres in Wales, open terrain in the Brecon Beacons and in the Quantock Hills.

  • DES membership.
  • Transport, Tolls, Fuel, ferry.
  • Insurance.
  • Mountain Bike Top.
  • Food.
  • Accommodation in tents and 1 week in Chalet.
  • Lift pass.
  • Bike spare parts. You will need your own tubes and rear hanger.
  • Maps and guide books.
  • Tents.
  • Stoves.

What’s not included

  • Full suspension mountain bike. (These can be hired.)
  • Full body armour.
  • Full face helmet.
  • Bike wear.
  • £50 selection/training fee is non- returnable.
  • Gold DOE Enrollment. (£40)
  • An extra ‘treats’ you may wish to purchase


The selection weekend will take place in Wales on the 16th – 18th September. The cost of selection is £50 which is non- returnable payable to Dorset Expeditionary Society If you would like to apply please return the attached forms with the selection cost of £50.

This expedition is lead by Mark Salmon and Richard Edgeley. Both leaders have extensive mountain bike experience and have led major DES overseas mountain bike expeditions. The Beast of Britain will be the second UK mountain bike Mark and Richard have led.
